Swiftwater Rescue Technician Level 2

May 29, 2023 08:30 am to May 30, 2023 17:30 pm
Swiftwater Safety & Rescue

For those fishing, boating, hunting, working, or recreating near rivers and other moving water environments, these courses focus on hazard awareness and avoidance, safe wading, self-rescue, helping a friend or coworker, and specialized safety equipment. A must to make sure you go home after a day on the river!

These courses vary from 1 to 4 day durations, and are offered in British Columbia and Alberta by OVERhang on behalf of Rescue Canada, with certification by the I.R.I.A.

Register well in advance to guarantee your spot, and provide your sizing info if you need to rent drysuit, PFD, helmet, boots, or gloves!

SSRT2

  • Most people take the Swiftwater Safety/Rescue Technician II (SSRT2) course if they are working or playing in or near low-risk river environments (class 1 or 2 rivers).  This includes Level 1 plus Safety, Self Rescue, and Companion Rescue, and is the industry standard for Occupational workers and Resource Management and the start for many Emergency Responders.
This course is designed to give the student the practical knowledge and skills to operate safely in a low-risk and shore-based environment.
  • Basic safety and self-rescue, entrapments, swimming, wading, and the simple systems are all performed in this course.
Registration is $495 plus GST. PPE rental (drysuit, helmet, gloves, boots, PFD with knife/tether/whistle, and throwbag on a deployment belt) is $200 if you don't have your own setup.

SSRT3

  • People working in higher risk environments, or engaged in professional rescue (fire fighters, search & rescue, Parks, Conservation Officers, etc) usually take the SSRT3 course.
  • The first two days are consistent with the SSRT2 course, then the third day we add more Subject Rescue, Rescue Swimming and Rescue Systems.
  • If you need to perform in-water rescues or work in medium- to high-risk environments, then this is your course.
Working from simple to complex systems and focusing on third-party rescues are all performed beyond the skills previously taught in the other courses.  Swimming in Class 2-3 whitewater, contact rescues, and scenarios are the focus of this training course.
  • Registration is $595 plus GST. PPE rental (drysuit, helmet, gloves, boots, PFD with knife/tether/whistle, and throwbag on a deployment belt) is $225 if you don't have your own setup.

All swiftwater courses include an online learning component in advance, which takes most people 3-4 hours.

We will add SSRT2 and SSRT3 courses to our schedule for May-September, after the spring freshet.  We are also open to working with groups that are seeking private courses, or out-of-town training throughout BC and Alberta, for 8-16 participants.
